Mercedes-Benz W205 & GLC X253 CarPlay & Android Auto Installation Guide: NTG5.0, 2016–2019
My Store AdminModern smartphone features on your original Mercedes-Benz screen.
A Mercedes W205 CarPlay retrofit or compatible GLC X253 Android Auto retrofit can add familiar navigation, music, calls and messages while keeping the dashboard’s original appearance. The right interface works alongside the Mercedes infotainment system, with operation through supported factory controls.
This detailed guide covers the TOP TAKTIL wireless and wired CarPlay / Android Auto interface listed for C-Class W205 and GLC X253 vehicles from 2016–2019 with the compatible original NTG5.0 system. It explains identification, installation, display configuration, Bluetooth audio, the factory microphone, camera integration and final testing.
- C-Class W205 / GLC X253
- Original screen retained
- 7-inch / 8.4-inch configurations
- Bluetooth audio setup
- 18 installation stages
The year range is a starting point, not a guarantee. The original head unit, display and hardware generation must match the interface. Some later cars within the registration-year range use a different infotainment generation. An aftermarket Android screen also needs separate consideration: this kit is intended for the compatible original Mercedes display.
01 · Start with the right upgrade
What does a Mercedes W205 / GLC X253 CarPlay retrofit do?
A retrofit MMI interface introduces smartphone projection into the existing multimedia installation. The original Mercedes head unit remains in the vehicle, the factory display remains in place, and the added interface supplies the CarPlay or Android Auto view when selected.
That arrangement suits an owner who likes the original dashboard but wants familiar phone navigation, supported music services, hands-free communication and compatible messaging functions. Apple CarPlay is for a compatible iPhone; Android Auto is for a compatible Android phone. The supported applications and permissions come from the relevant platform and phone. [8] [10]
The interface does not turn the original display into a touchscreen. A touchpad on the console is a separate control from the screen itself. Expect to operate supported functions with the original controller, compatible steering-wheel buttons and voice features. A touch overlay or replacement touchscreen is a different product.
The installation also does not automatically add a new amplifier, factory navigation licences, instrument-cluster maps or every feature shown in a generic demonstration. Define the required result: reliable phone connection, a clear audio route, proper control operation and a dependable return to the original Mercedes system.
02 · Compatibility before dismantling
Mercedes C-Class W205 and GLC X253: which cars are covered?
The TOP TAKTIL selection is listed for C-Class W205 and GLC X253, 2016–2019, with the compatible original NTG5.0 equipment. Retain that complete description when checking fitment. A C-Class badge, a GLC badge or a registration document showing 2019 does not identify the installed multimedia hardware. [1]
| Vehicle / equipment | What must match | Action before ordering |
|---|---|---|
| C-Class W205 | The actual factory infotainment generation, original display and correct harness. | Provide the model, build details, dashboard photographs and system identification. |
| GLC X253 | The same equipment checks, including original camera and audio options. | Confirm the complete configuration rather than relying on a similar C-Class installation. |
| 2016–2019 listing range | The vehicle must still have the compatible NTG hardware. | Pay particular attention to later cars and production-change periods. |
| Original 7-inch or 8.4-inch screen | Screen type and the corresponding interface configuration. | Confirm the active display specification and the module’s screen-setting chart. |
| Factory Bluetooth audio | Working media streaming through the original Mercedes system. | Play phone music through the factory Bluetooth media source before installation. |
| Aftermarket Android display | This is a different display architecture from the original-screen application. | Identify the conversion already fitted and obtain separate confirmation. |
| Other body codes / later systems | Estate, coupé, cabriolet and other NTG generations require their own approval. | Do not extend this selection automatically to S205, C205, A205, C253, NTG5.5 or MBUX. |
Why do some installers say NTG5.0 and others NTG5.2?
“NTG5.0” is often used as a broad retrofit-catalogue label, while W205 and X253 equipment is also identified more specifically as NTG5 / NTG5.2 in specialist documentation. Those labels should prompt a hardware check rather than a guess that every NTG5-labelled box has the correct configuration. [2] [17]
Use the head-unit identification, vehicle equipment information, screen type and supplier’s harness/configuration record together. Do not choose a switch pattern merely because “5.0” appears in the product title while “5.2” appears on a forum.
The important 2018–2019 changeover check
Mercedes’ facelift C-Class information describes changed multimedia equipment, including a 7-inch display and an available 10.25-inch display, plus touch-sensitive steering controls. A small factory screen can therefore exist in a later architecture too. Screen size alone cannot prove that an earlier interface will work. [3]
Keep the distinction between registration date, production date and installed equipment. Imports and previous retrofits add another reason to verify the actual car. Send VIN/chassis details privately to the compatibility team when needed; the final selection must reflect the car being fitted.
03 · Create an identification record
How to identify the original Mercedes infotainment system
Begin with the original system operating normally and the car parked. Look through the ordinary settings and information menus, using the vehicle handbook for the actual menu names. Record the complete information shown rather than entering hidden engineering menus to search for a familiar acronym.
- Photograph the dashboard straight on. Include the display, vents, centre controls and steering wheel.
- Photograph the console controller. Include the rotary control, touchpad if fitted and surrounding buttons.
- Record the original system information. Capture hardware, software and part-number information where available through normal menus.
- Identify Audio 20 or COMAND. Use the vehicle equipment record and actual unit information, rather than the presence of a navigation map alone.
- Record screen size and equipment changes. Note any replacement display, previously added interface or modified USB connection.
- Confirm Bluetooth music streaming. A successful telephone call does not demonstrate the separate media function.
- Record camera and sound equipment. Include the reversing camera, 360-degree system if fitted, parking sensors and Burmester audio.
Audio 20 and COMAND are useful labels, with limits
The factory multimedia families have equipment and market variations. Mercedes owner documentation itself distinguishes fitted options and media capabilities. Use a model-specific handbook and the car’s equipment record to resolve uncertainty; a photograph of another owner’s start-up screen is supporting evidence rather than a full identification. [7]
A large screen does not identify every part of the audio arrangement, and a navigation SD card does not establish the correct MMI cable set. If information remains uncertain, obtain supplier confirmation before dismantling the console.
Original display versus an existing Android conversion
Check whether the screen and interface are still Mercedes equipment. A replacement Android display can retain a Mercedes-style menu while using its own electronics and video connections. This original-screen retrofit should not be selected for that installation merely because the dashboard resembles an NTG5 car.
04 · Choose the correct solution
MMI retrofit, wireless USB adapter, factory activation or replacement display?
| Upgrade route | Starting point | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Original-screen MMI interface | A compatible factory system that needs an added smartphone-projection interface. | NTG generation, screen mode, harness, audio route and retained functions. |
| Wired-to-wireless USB adapter | An existing compatible wired CarPlay or Android Auto connection. | The required factory projection system must already work; an ordinary USB socket is insufficient. |
| OEM smartphone-integration activation / retrofit | Specific compatible factory hardware and software. | Legitimate activation, equipment requirements and vehicle-specific eligibility. |
| Replacement Android / Linux display | An installation where replacing the physical screen is the chosen goal. | Display mounting, software platform, original-system integration and the separate audio arrangement. |
This article follows the original-screen MMI-interface route. Android Auto is phone projection; it does not make this box an Android tablet with a Play Store. Do not apply installation instructions, firmware or Android applications from a replacement-screen product to the retrofit module.
Likewise, an OEM activation dongle is not a substitute for checking whether the installed Mercedes hardware supports the desired factory function. Decide on the architecture first, then choose the parts and fitting procedure for that architecture.
05 · Understand what each connection does
The five connection paths behind a successful retrofit
A picture on the screen, working buttons and audible music are separate results. Plan the paths individually so that a fault in one does not lead to unnecessary changes in another.
| Path | Purpose | Typical installation check |
|---|---|---|
| Power and vehicle data | Supply, supported controls and wake-up/switching information. | Correct vehicle-specific harness and fully seated locking plugs. |
| Display video | Introduce the interface view while preserving the factory picture path. | Correct LVDS/video interception point, cable direction and screen setting. |
| Phone projection | Connect the phone to the MMI using the supported wireless or USB mode. | The MMI pairing/device name, Wi-Fi connection or designated data USB lead. |
| Audio and microphone | Deliver sound through the Mercedes system and establish the supported call/voice route. | Factory Bluetooth audio, MMI audio-device pairing and microphone configuration. |
| Camera and parking display | Maintain the appropriate original camera view or show a compatible added CVBS camera. | Camera selection, reverse detection, video format and correct return to the previous screen. |
The phone’s USB connection and the car’s audio-source connection are different links. Connecting a phone by cable can establish wired CarPlay while the installation still needs its configured Bluetooth audio route to the Mercedes speakers.
Published NTG5 fitting documentation demonstrates a T-harness at the head unit and a video insertion path, with special handling of an optical insert where fitted. It also distinguishes the actual head unit behind the console from the display above it. The TOP TAKTIL diagram must determine the exact plugs and interception point for your module. [5]
Keep the original radio, navigation and camera system in the plan. The objective is to add a selectable interface while preserving the factory connections it depends on.
06 · Prepare once, fit carefully
Kit contents, installation tools and pre-installation checks
Check the actual box contents
The product brief lists the MMI interface, vehicle-specific harness, USB cable and connection guidance. Lay out everything supplied, including the display lead, wireless antenna or camera/media breakout required by that revision. Compare the parts with the actual wiring diagram before removing the original equipment.
Make a record of the module label, serial/reference information, connector labels and switch chart. Illustrations may show a different enclosure or accessory arrangement. Measure the actual box and cable clearances before selecting a mounting position.
Useful tools and materials
Prepare non-marring trim tools, correctly fitting Torx bits and drivers, an inspection light, protective cloths, a screw tray and removable connector labels. Suitable automotive loom tape, cable supports and approved mounting materials help prevent rattles and strain. A vehicle-compatible diagnostic tool is useful for before-and-after checks.
Select the tools from the vehicle procedure rather than assuming that every Mercedes console uses the same release method. Keep the driver, passenger footwell and surrounding trim protected. Allow enough space to support the head unit without pulling on its cables.
Build a working baseline
- Play FM radio and Bluetooth music through the original speakers.
- Make a normal factory hands-free call and check microphone clarity.
- Test the controller, steering buttons and ordinary vehicle menus.
- Record camera operation, parking graphics and warning sounds.
- Check original display quality and note any existing intermittent fault.
- Save an appropriate diagnostic scan and record existing warning messages.
Bluetooth telephony and Bluetooth music should both be tested. Mercedes’ COMAND documentation identifies a specific Bluetooth audio mode and device-authorisation process, with media-profile requirements. A phone appearing in the telephone list is not enough evidence that the intended music route is ready. [4]
Use the current Mercedes procedure for the vehicle’s 12-volt supply and relevant restraint-system precautions before disconnecting equipment. Keep safety-related connectors and original controls accounted for. On plug-in hybrid versions, this guide does not cover work on the high-voltage system.
07 · Practical fitting sequence
How to install the W205 / X253 CarPlay interface: 18 stages
Use this sequence after confirming the exact vehicle and kit. Fasteners, access panels, connector arrangements and cable routes must follow the model-specific repair procedure and supplied interface diagram. Complete a temporary functional test before securing the module and refitting the console.
Stage 1 — Match the kit to the vehicle record
Compare the order confirmation with the car’s original system, screen and options. Confirm whether the diagram calls the relevant configuration NTG5.0, NTG5.2 or another precise hardware reference. Record the initial switch positions before changing anything.
Identify every lead on the bench: vehicle harness, display connection, USB, antenna and any camera breakout. Resolve an unexplained extra plug or missing adapter before taking the dashboard apart.
Stage 2 — Protect the console and isolate the 12-volt supply
Park securely, complete the baseline checks and shut the vehicle down as required. Follow the prescribed power-isolation procedure. Protect gloss-black, wood, metal and leather surfaces with clean suitable materials.
Prepare a padded support for the removed trim and original unit. Decide where screws and clips will be stored so that they return to their original locations. Photograph the untouched console before beginning.
Stage 3 — Release the required console access trim
Follow the correct W205 or X253 trim procedure for the fitted console and steering position. Open the access areas specified, identify the fasteners and release the panel at its intended retaining points.
Work progressively with the correct tool. If the panel resists, inspect for a remaining fastener or a different release direction. Avoid levering against the display glass, control buttons, vent vanes or an exposed decorative edge.
Stage 4 — Support the control panel and label its connections
Keep a released console panel supported while identifying the wiring behind it. Depending on the trim arrangement, original controls, illumination or other components may remain attached. Photograph and label any connectors that the access procedure requires you to disconnect.
Release connector locks correctly and pull the housings rather than the wires. Put the panel where its surface and attached components are protected. Record which original connectors must be restored before a powered test.
Stage 5 — Expose and release the original head unit
Locate the actual infotainment head unit behind the console, rather than confusing it with the dashboard screen. Release its specified mounting fixings and bring it forward only far enough to access the rear connections safely.
Support the unit and inspect the available cable length. The original screen often remains physically in place during an interface installation. Remove it only when the exact vehicle/interface procedure requires that access.
Stage 6 — Photograph and identify the original plugs
Record the rear of the head unit before unplugging it. Identify the main vehicle connector, the relevant display connection and any optical insert. Use the verified diagram to distinguish video, antenna and other connections.
Do not infer a plug’s function from its colour alone. Similar-looking keyed connectors can carry different signals. Label the original location and cable direction so that the factory arrangement can be reconstructed if diagnosis is needed.
Stage 7 — Install the vehicle-specific power/data harness
Connect the T-harness at the approved vehicle connection point. Seat the plugs squarely and close their locking mechanisms fully. A connector can look nearly home while its lever or latch remains partially engaged.
Route the harness so that the head unit can slide back without pressing against the plug bodies. Keep the original vehicle wiring supported. Do not splice unknown CAN wires or join unused power leads as a shortcut.
Stage 8 — Preserve any required optical connection
If the vehicle connector contains an optical insert and the harness instructions require it to be transferred, move the complete insert into the specified position with its orientation preserved. This is a connector-transfer operation, not a reason to modify the fibre itself.
Keep optical ends clean, avoid tight bends and protect the lead from being trapped. A missing original optical path can affect factory sound even when the interface screen powers up. Verify the original audio again at the temporary test.
Stage 9 — Insert the display connection at the correct point
Follow the supplied diagram to place the MMI in the factory video path. Establish which lead goes towards the original head unit and which goes towards the display. Match connector keying and the module’s actual input/output labels.
Some NTG5 interfaces make these connections at the head unit and specifically leave the original display-end plug untouched. Do not transfer a screen-end installation method from another Mercedes model or a replacement-display kit. Keep the video lead supported and free from sharp bends.
Stage 10 — Connect the wireless antenna and USB lead
Attach the supplied antenna or antenna leads to the designated connection points, where external antennas are used. Keep the active antenna area away from a metal enclosure and follow the mounting guidance for that revision.
Route the MMI’s own USB connection to a usable location. Label it so that it can be distinguished from an original Mercedes USB socket. Leave the connection accessible for wired projection, supported media and any supplier-approved service operation.
Stage 11 — Complete any camera connections
Identify the camera path before connecting the breakout lead. An original camera installation and an added aftermarket camera do not necessarily use the same input or power arrangement. Follow the documented OEM-camera or aftermarket-camera configuration.
For an added camera, confirm a compatible CVBS signal. This TOP TAKTIL interface does not support AHD cameras. Match the camera’s power requirements and trigger method separately from its video connector.
Stage 12 — Set the verified display / vehicle configuration
Use the chart supplied with the actual module to select the correct original display and vehicle/head-unit mode. Record the chosen positions clearly. Confirm the switch numbering and the printed ON direction rather than copying the apparent orientation of a photograph.
Follow the required power-down procedure before changing settings. Keep access to the switch bank until the original picture, MMI picture, controls and camera have all been tested. Do not use another manufacturer’s binary switch pattern as a substitute.
Stage 13 — Inspect the wiring and restore original controls
Check each connection against the diagram. Close every lock, secure exposed unused leads as specified and make sure no cable is trapped behind a mounting tab. Support the head unit and module for the first test.
Reconnect original console controls and any safety-related connectors disturbed during access before powering the car as required by its procedure. The test setup must be stable, with no loose metal contacting terminals or the rear of the head unit.
Stage 14 — Power up and test the original Mercedes system first
Reconnect the vehicle supply through the prescribed procedure and allow the original infotainment system to start. Verify the factory picture, radio, controller and ordinary menus before selecting the new interface.
If the original screen stays blank, factory audio disappears or new warning messages appear, stop the commissioning sequence and inspect the installation. Phone pairing is not the first repair for a missing factory display or disconnected original harness.
Stage 15 — Open the MMI and establish its Bluetooth audio route
Use the switching control stated in the supplied instructions and confirm that the MMI menu appears at the correct size. Then set up the car-to-interface Bluetooth audio link, using the actual advertised device name corresponding to DC_Audio_BT.
Select the appropriate factory Bluetooth media source. Where the module offers a supported local-media test, use it to check the audio path independently of phone projection. Keep the unit accessible until this route works reliably.
Stage 16 — Pair one phone and test real functions
Connect the first phone to the MMI’s projection connection, identified in the product guidance as CAJA.... Follow the supported wired or wireless setup and complete the phone’s prompts while parked.
Test a map, a music track, a spoken navigation instruction and an incoming/outgoing call. Ask the other caller to assess the microphone. Check original-camera takeover and return to the MMI before assuming the screen demonstration is complete.
Stage 17 — Secure the module and refit the console
Use the approved mounting area with clearance for connectors, cooling and service access. Keep the box away from moving controls, airbag deployment areas, heater mechanisms and places exposed to moisture. Do not compress the module behind the head unit simply to make the trim close.
Support the loom with suitable automotive materials. Guide the original unit back while watching the harness, then refit fasteners and trim through the vehicle procedure. The console should sit correctly without using screws to force a distorted panel into place.
Stage 18 — Repeat the tests after final assembly
Repeat screen switching, audio, controls, calls and camera operation with the dashboard fully assembled. Reassembly can move an antenna, pinch a USB cable or disturb a connector that worked during the open-console test.
Compare a post-installation diagnostic check with the baseline. Then test shutdown, locking and a later restart under the appropriate conditions. Save the working configuration and explain the completed installation to the driver.
08 · Configure the original display
7-inch and 8.4-inch screens: setting the MMI configuration switches
The listed interface supports the compatible original 7-inch and 8.4-inch display configurations. The physical switch bank sets the relevant output mode according to the supplied chart. Correct settings must match both the screen and the supported vehicle/head-unit arrangement.
Use a controlled configuration method
- Identify the actual original screen and head-unit version.
- Photograph the module label and original switch positions.
- Read the numbering and ON direction on the physical switch bank.
- Apply the exact pattern specified for this module and vehicle.
- Use the documented power/restart sequence.
- Test the original view and MMI view independently.
- Record the final working combination with the order details.
| What you see | What to check first |
|---|---|
| Factory display works; MMI image is cropped or incorrectly scaled | The selected screen/head-unit mode and the correct display cable arrangement. |
| Factory display works; MMI switches to black | MMI video path, input/output direction, power and the verified switch chart. |
| Factory display is also missing | Restore and inspect the original display path and main connections before further configuration. |
| Picture changes when trim is pressed | Connector engagement, cable strain and a trapped or damaged lead. |
| Only the added camera picture is missing | Camera input, signal format, supply and trigger; do not start by changing a working main-screen mode. |
A configuration chart from a superficially similar MMI can allocate switches differently. Some include microphone or vehicle-data settings as well as resolution. Preserve the distinction between the supplier’s verified chart and an online example.
Changing the display configuration does not increase the physical resolution of the original Mercedes screen. It selects the appropriate mode for that hardware. A larger replacement display is a separate upgrade with a separate installation.
09 · Set up the sound deliberately
DC_Audio_BT and CAJA: the Mercedes Bluetooth setup explained
The product guidance describes two different Bluetooth relationships. Confusing them is a common reason to see CarPlay on the screen while hearing nothing from the speakers. Keep the purpose of each device name clear during setup.
| Link | Pairing reference | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Mercedes factory system ↔ MMI audio connection | DC_Audio_BT, or the corresponding actual name shown by the supplied module. | Deliver the interface’s media audio to the car’s original Bluetooth audio system. |
| Smartphone ↔ MMI projection connection | CAJA... in the product instructions; use the full name displayed by your module. | Begin the supported phone-projection connection. |
| Smartphone ↔ MMI wireless projection network | The Wi-Fi connection established through the supported setup. | Carry the wireless projection session; Bluetooth pairing alone is not the complete wireless setup. |
| Call / factory-microphone route | The approved factory-microphone and call configuration for the actual revision. | Provide working speech in both directions; it must be tested independently of music. |
Step A — Verify original Bluetooth music before installation
Use a known working phone and play a track through the car’s original Bluetooth media source. Confirm normal volume and speaker operation. This establishes that the required factory function is present and working before the MMI is introduced.
Step B — Pair the Mercedes system with the MMI audio device
- Power the installed interface and make its audio connection discoverable as instructed.
- In the original Mercedes connection menu, search for the corresponding DC_Audio_BT device.
- Authorise the connection using the on-screen prompts and the supplied procedure.
- Open the original Bluetooth audio/media source and select the intended device.
- Return to the MMI display using its documented switching control.
A published Mercedes-interface manual describes the same general arrangement using a DC_AUDIO_BT name with a device suffix: authorise the interface from the car, select factory Bluetooth audio, then return to the added interface. This supports the audio-path explanation; it does not establish identical passwords, plugs or settings across brands. [6]
Step C — Pair the smartphone with the MMI
Open the MMI’s phone-connection screen and identify the complete device name referenced as CAJA.... Pair from the phone and accept the requested projection prompts. For wireless operation, keep Wi-Fi enabled and follow the relevant iPhone or Android instructions below.
Use one phone during initial commissioning. Keep a record of existing factory phone connections, then retain or remove only the pairings required by the verified call/audio arrangement. Do not follow a blanket instruction to delete the car from every phone merely because an older AUX-based kit required a different setup.
Step D — Test the output and source selection
Play one track from the projected interface. Check the volume at the original Mercedes controls and confirm the intended factory audio device is still selected. Then test a route instruction and a call separately.
If the car has selected the phone directly as its media source while the installation expects the MMI audio device, the screen and sound may be following different paths. Correct the device/source selection before changing gain, installing adapters or altering the wiring.
A cable between the phone and the MMI can replace the wireless phone-projection link. It does not automatically replace the interface-to-car audio link. Keep the configured factory Bluetooth source available when using this kit’s Bluetooth audio method.
Does every NTG5 retrofit require AUX activation?
No universal AUX rule applies. This guide follows the Bluetooth audio arrangement specified for the TOP TAKTIL kit. Other interfaces use AUX, a USB audio accessory or a selectable alternative. Their activation procedures should not be applied to a working Bluetooth-based installation.
If your exact supplied revision specifies a different approved audio method, follow that revision’s documentation after confirmation. Do not buy a generic USB-to-AUX adapter or alter coding simply because an older installation thread discusses it.
10 · Commission calls and original audio
Factory microphone, calls and Burmester sound-system checks
The product is intended to use the compatible original microphone through the supported installation and configuration. Audible music does not prove a working microphone. Media playback, incoming call audio and the driver’s outgoing speech need separate checks.
Test four different audio events
- Music: play a clean track through CarPlay or Android Auto.
- Guidance: trigger a spoken navigation instruction and check the return of music.
- Incoming call: answer using the supported controls and verify both voices.
- Voice command: make a request using the supported assistant function.
For the call test, use a second phone and ask the listener about clarity, level and echo. Test once with the cabin fan at an ordinary setting. A quiet workshop demonstration with the phone held near the driver can conceal a poor microphone arrangement.
If the other person cannot hear you
Check the approved microphone/call mode and the relevant harness connections for the actual module. Verify the phone’s selected call output. Determine whether the failure affects normal factory calls, projected calls or both.
Follow the supplied instructions for any required factory hands-free pairing. Do not add extra simultaneous call connections at random. Likewise, do not connect an external microphone or a passive splitter to an unknown socket before identifying what that input expects.
If the caller hears an echo
Begin with a moderate speaker level and the correct call route. Where the module provides supported microphone gain or echo-cancellation controls, use its documented setup. Record original settings and change one control at a time.
Do not copy gain figures, calibration passwords or switch numbers from another MMI. A setting that suits one hardware platform may change an entirely different function on another.
What changes with Burmester?
This retrofit keeps the original Mercedes audio system in use. Confirm the factory radio and Bluetooth media work correctly before fitting, preserve the original harness/optical arrangement where applicable, and check the sound again afterwards.
The retrofit should not be treated as a replacement amplifier or a new set of speakers. Original sound controls remain part of the factory system. Check all channels, available balance/fader functions, volume range and unwanted noise before making tonal adjustments.
If even the original radio becomes silent after installation, return to the vehicle connections first. If the radio works and only projected audio is silent, concentrate on the configured MMI audio route. That comparison avoids confusing a factory connection issue with a phone-pairing issue.
11 · Connect an iPhone
Wireless and wired Apple CarPlay setup
Complete the first setup while parked, with the MMI working and its audio route established. Use the connection instructions for the actual supplied module. The original Mercedes USB sockets and the MMI USB lead are separate connection points.
Wireless CarPlay
- Enable Siri, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi on the iPhone.
- Open the MMI’s phone/projection screen.
- Pair with its full Bluetooth name corresponding to the CAJA... reference.
- Accept the CarPlay prompts and any appropriate permission to reconnect.
- Confirm maps, music and calling through the intended audio route.
Apple’s guidance identifies Siri, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth as relevant to wireless setup. The iPhone’s Settings > General > CarPlay area manages recognised systems and supported app arrangement. Only CarPlay-compatible applications appear in that interface. [8]
Wired CarPlay
Use a suitable data cable from the iPhone to the MMI’s designated USB connection and accept the initial prompts. Select the wired mode if that revision requires it. Confirm the separate factory Bluetooth audio source remains correctly configured.
If CarPlay does not connect
Check the supported connection mode, cable and correct USB port. For wireless operation, check Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and the CarPlay network’s auto-join setting. Check Siri and relevant Screen Time restrictions. Apple’s troubleshooting guidance also covers re-pairing through “Forget This Car” and using a direct USB connection when an adapter chain is unreliable. [9]
Test another compatible iPhone where practical. A second phone working through the same installation directs attention towards the first phone’s settings or software. Both phones failing in the same way directs attention back to the MMI connection and configuration.
12 · Connect an Android phone
Wireless and wired Android Auto setup
Android Auto depends on a supported phone and receiver configuration. At the research date, Google lists Android 11 or later, compatible equipment and an active data plan for phone use. Wireless projection also requires suitable 5 GHz Wi-Fi support. Confirm the current phone requirements and the interface revision’s supported modes. [10]
Wireless Android Auto
- Park and allow the Mercedes system and MMI to start.
- Enable Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and location services for the initial setup.
- Open the MMI’s Android Auto/projection connection screen.
- Pair with the MMI and follow the prompts on the phone.
- Check a route, media playback, voice input and a call.
Google describes Bluetooth pairing as the first wireless connection step and recommends keeping Wi-Fi and location services enabled during setup. Android Auto is integrated into supported phones; installing an unrelated Android application on this MMI is not the commissioning method. [11]
Wired Android Auto
Connect directly to the MMI’s designated data USB lead with a suitable cable, then follow the phone and interface prompts. Verify that the connection carries data rather than charging only. Keep the configured car-side audio route selected.
Google recommends a high-quality cable under one metre for the phone connection and avoiding hubs or extensions. Begin testing at the approved MMI USB lead so that added sockets and adapters can be assessed separately. [12]
If the connection is intermittent
Compare wired and wireless operation where both are supported. A stable wired session with unreliable wireless operation points towards the wireless setup, antennas, phone or radio environment. A fault present in both modes needs a wider check of the projection software, power and audio arrangement.
Keep the test simple: one phone, one app and one connection method. Add another phone or change automatic-start preferences after the basic installation has proved stable.
13 · Use the original controls
Controller operation, steering-wheel buttons and switching back to Mercedes
Learn the documented switching action for the actual module. Retrofit systems can use a press-and-hold action on a factory button, but the chosen button and required timing vary. Record the correct action during handover rather than teaching the driver several guessed combinations.
Test switching in both directions. Returning to the original view should restore access to the factory menus that the car already has. Then select the MMI again and confirm the phone session returns as expected.
Check each control separately
- Rotary movement and selection/press operation.
- Back/return action and movement between application areas.
- Steering-wheel volume and mute behaviour.
- Call answer/end and supported voice activation.
- Track changes and any supported short/long-press distinctions.
A supported factory touchpad does not make the physical screen touch-sensitive. Likewise, working volume buttons do not establish every controller function. Complete the checks inside the phone interface and in the original Mercedes view.
Factory navigation, instrument cluster and head-up display
The original navigation system and smartphone navigation are different sources. Do not promise that phone maps, turn arrows or app information will appear in the instrument cluster or head-up display unless the exact interface explicitly supports that output.
Check ordinary vehicle settings, climate menus and driving-mode access after switching back to the original system. The original head unit remains an important part of the installation and must retain the connections required for its factory functions.
14 · Preserve dependable parking views
Original reversing camera, aftermarket CVBS cameras and the AHD restriction
The product specification supports compatible OEM reversing-camera systems and compatible aftermarket CVBS cameras. It explicitly excludes AHD cameras. Establish the camera type and signal before ordering accessories or changing camera settings.
Retaining an original Mercedes camera
Record the original picture, parking graphics, activation conditions and return behaviour before installation. Configure the MMI’s OEM-camera mode according to the supplied instructions, then test camera takeover from the original menu and from phone projection.
A working factory camera before installation does not establish that every aftermarket interface setting is correct. Check the retained factory video path and reverse-detection configuration. Avoid applying a camera power feed to an original camera connector without an approved diagram.
What about a factory 360-degree camera?
Request explicit confirmation for the complete 360-degree system. Generic “OEM camera support” should not be interpreted as a promise about every multi-camera view, controller or activation method. Include the relevant original buttons and views in the acceptance test.
Adding a CVBS reversing camera
Match the video standard accepted by the MMI and the camera’s specified supply. Video, power and reverse trigger are separate connections. Use the designated rear-camera input; a general AV input is not automatically interchangeable.
Follow the camera manufacturer’s mounting and cable-routing instructions. Preserve weather seals and adequate movement allowance at the tailgate or boot lid. Keep connections supported and protected, with the cable clear of hinges and moving mechanisms.
Why an RCA plug does not prove compatibility
CVBS and AHD cameras can use similar RCA-style connectors while carrying different video signals. Physical connection alone is insufficient. Select a genuine compatible CVBS output, including the required format where specified; do not expect an unsupported AHD picture to appear after a resolution-switch change.
Parking sounds and guide overlays
Test parking warning sounds and graphics independently. Check reverse engagement, repeated activation, front/rear warnings where fitted, and return to the previous view. If two sets of guide lines appear, identify which device generates each set and use the supported setting to remove the unnecessary overlay.
Complete these tests with the vehicle secured and the appropriate workshop procedure. A brief reverse-screen demonstration does not establish reliable operation after a phone call, a source change or a later restart.
15 · Make wireless operation dependable
Antenna placement, phone maps and mobile data
Wireless projection needs a dependable radio link between the phone and MMI. Fit the antenna arrangement supplied for the actual module, with the active antenna area positioned as instructed. Do not wrap it in metal tape or bury it inside a metal enclosure.
Test after the console is reassembled as well as while it is open. A cable or antenna moved behind trim can change an installation that worked on the bench. Keep the phone in a practical cabin location and test a normal reconnect after leaving and returning to the vehicle.
Projection Wi-Fi and internet access are different functions
The phone’s Wi-Fi connection to the MMI is part of wireless projection. It does not necessarily provide internet access. Online search, traffic and streaming usually depend on the phone’s available data service and app requirements.
If maps appear but online search fails, check the phone’s mobile-data connection and app permissions before touching the vehicle wiring. Compare a downloaded track or an offline map function with an online service.
Use phone-navigation tests that reveal the actual problem
Check position, route instructions and audio independently. A correct map picture with no spoken guidance suggests a different problem from a phone reporting the wrong position. Compare two supported navigation apps if the fault appears only in one.
This interface does not automatically update the factory Mercedes navigation maps or add phone-map output to another factory display. Keep the original navigation system and projected phone navigation distinct during diagnosis.
16 · Set up everyday operation
USB media, volume levels and listening to the original radio
The product brief includes USB media functions. Use the module’s designated connection, supported file types and capacity guidance. A filename extension alone does not guarantee that every encoded media file will play.
Keep the USB socket accessible and support the lead where it passes through trim. Use the appropriate phone data cable for wired projection and avoid a loose connector that is repeatedly pulled by a closing storage-compartment lid.
Set music, calls and navigation levels separately
Adjust each supported audio category while that sound is active, following the actual interface controls. Test a spoken direction over music, an incoming call and the return to music afterwards. Begin with moderate levels and add gain only after verifying the correct route.
Can the factory FM radio play with phone navigation on screen?
Seeing phone maps and hearing the original radio are separate source choices. With this kit’s Bluetooth audio method, selecting FM may change the route used for projected guidance. Do not promise simultaneous factory-radio audio and phone instructions unless the supplied revision explicitly supports that behaviour.
Test the driver’s preferred listening arrangement during handover. Supported projected radio or music apps may be another useful option. Video/media features should be set up and used only in accordance with the equipment instructions and applicable rules.
17 · Check beyond the first successful start
Shutdown, wake-up, starting behaviour and firmware
Check a cold start, a wake-up after parking and an engine start as separate events. Note whether a problem affects the original system, the MMI, the phone connection or only sound. That distinction is more useful than the general description “CarPlay stopped working”.
If the MMI restarts when the engine starts
Record whether the box loses power completely, returns to its logo, freezes or only drops the wireless session. Check the approved supply arrangement and battery condition using the vehicle’s test procedure. A power interruption and an application fault need different remedies.
If the screen is off but the vehicle does not sleep correctly
A dark display is not a parked-current test. Check the documented module shutdown arrangement, vehicle-data compatibility and connected accessories. Use the Mercedes-specific conditions for any quiescent-current measurement, with suitable equipment.
Do not bridge ignition-related control leads to a permanent battery feed to force the interface on. Restore the approved harness and control arrangement. A generic waiting time or current limit from a forum should not be substituted for the vehicle’s specification.
Use software updates with a clear purpose
Save the module’s software, hardware and configuration information before an update. Obtain files and instructions from the supplier for the exact revision. Similar-looking enclosures, the same Bluetooth prefix or a shared NTG label do not establish firmware compatibility.
For an app-specific fault, compare another app and another supported phone before considering MMI firmware. For a hardware-path fault, complete connection and power checks first. Keep a record of the symptom, changes made and test result.
18 · Diagnose in a useful order
Mercedes W205 / X253 CarPlay retrofit troubleshooting
Use the symptom to choose the next test. Change one variable at a time and follow the required power-isolation procedure before changing connections. Preserve photographs and working settings so that support can assess the actual installation.
| Symptom | Check first | Next useful action |
|---|---|---|
| Original Mercedes display is blank | Main vehicle plug, original video path and correct interception point. | Restore/verify the factory path before phone setup or further switch changes. |
| Original menus work; the MMI will not appear | Module power, correct switching action and vehicle configuration. | Check the supplied switch chart and control connection. |
| MMI image is cropped or stretched | Original display identification and selected screen/head-unit mode. | Apply the verified pattern for the actual module. |
| Picture flickers or changes when trim moves | Video-connector locks, cable strain and trapped leads. | Inspect the route with power isolated as required. |
| CarPlay picture works; there is no sound | Car-to-MMI audio pairing and selected factory Bluetooth source. | Confirm DC_Audio_BT is the intended audio device, independently of CAJA phone pairing. |
| Factory radio is also silent | Main harness and any required optical-insert transfer. | Compare the original connections with the baseline photographs. |
| Wired projection works; audio is still missing | The separate interface-to-car audio route. | Keep the approved factory Bluetooth audio method configured. |
| Sound comes from the phone | Selected playback/call output and intended MMI connection. | Correct the output route before changing gain or wiring. |
| Music plays; caller cannot hear the driver | Factory-microphone mode, call routing and relevant harness connection. | Compare factory calls and projected calls separately. |
| Caller hears echo | Call route, speaker level and supported microphone settings. | Use the module’s documented echo procedure where available. |
| Music volume is good; guidance is too quiet | Guidance volume and supported mixing/ducking settings. | Adjust while a spoken instruction is active. |
| Audio disappears after selecting FM | Original media-source change and supported simultaneous-source behaviour. | Return to the configured source and test the intended listening arrangement. |
| Audio problem occurs only in one app | App state, permissions, phone software and another supported app. | Reproduce the symptom before considering vehicle changes. |
| CAJA appears, but wireless projection does not start | Projection prompts, Wi-Fi and phone compatibility. | Follow the actual MMI’s pairing procedure with one phone. |
| Phone charges but wired projection fails | MMI data USB port, cable and connection mode. | Test directly at the designated MMI lead with a known suitable data cable. |
| Wireless works before refitting; fails afterwards | Antenna position, connector engagement and cable compression. | Inspect what changed during final assembly. |
| Phone maps load; online search fails | Phone mobile data, app permissions and service availability. | Compare an offline function with another online service. |
| Factory controls partly work | Correct vehicle mode and supported button mappings. | Test short/long presses against the supplied guide. |
| Original camera no longer takes over | OEM camera selection, factory path and reverse detection. | Compare activation in the factory view and the MMI view. |
| Added camera shows “no signal” | CVBS output, correct input, power and trigger. | Confirm the camera is not sending unsupported AHD video. |
| Two sets of parking guidelines appear | Camera-generated and interface-generated overlays. | Disable the unnecessary overlay through a supported setting. |
| 360-degree functions are incomplete | Exact camera-system compatibility and module revision. | Obtain a hardware-specific retention answer before changing camera wiring. |
| MMI restarts during starting | Supply stability and approved power-control arrangement. | Record the event and test the relevant electrical path. |
| Fault appears only after parking | Wake-up, automatic pairings, software version and accessories. | Compare a cold boot with a wake from the parked state. |
| New vehicle warnings appear | Original connectors, harness seating and before/after diagnostics. | Investigate the cause before clearing faults or changing coding. |
| Console will not sit correctly | Harness bulk, mounting position and misplaced clips. | Remove and inspect; do not force trim against the module. |
Information that makes support effective
Send the vehicle model/build details, original-system identification, screen size, sound/camera options, module label, switch positions and clear connection photographs. State whether the original system still works, which pairing names appear, and whether the fault affects wired, wireless or both modes. Include software information and a short video where useful.
19 · Read owner reports in context
What Russian and international installation discussions teach us
Owner discussions help identify useful tests, but the hardware, date and installation architecture must stay attached to the report. An older AUX-based box, an original-screen MMI and a replacement Android display can all appear in a search for “W205 CarPlay”. Their instructions are not interchangeable.
4PDA: compare navigation apps before dismantling the console
In a 25 April 2022 post, 4PDA user Skaiters described an iPhone 12 / C-Class W205 CarPlay setup where opening Yandex Maps stopped the radio audio, while Yandex Navigator did not cause the same behaviour. The post does not identify enough interface hardware to diagnose the cause or apply the result to the current TOP TAKTIL kit. [15]
The useful test: distinguish an app-specific audio interaction from a missing audio connection. Compare another supported navigation app, the selected media source and guidance behaviour before changing vehicle wiring.
MBWorld: older audio instructions belong to older hardware
A W205 retrofit discussion from 2018 described AUX/USB audio arrangements, including a GLC owner reporting unsuccessful USB-AUX adapter attempts. Those observations concern earlier equipment and do not establish the requirements of a current Bluetooth-based interface. [13]
The same discussion includes a 2019 account of a revised module with different reported camera/microphone support. The practical lesson is to record the actual hardware revision when asking about retention, rather than treating a product family name as a complete specification. [14]
Russian-language workshop documentation: identify the upgrade architecture
Avtomozg documents an additional CarPlay/Android Auto interface fitted to a W205’s original NTG5.0 system using factory connectors and controls. That is a useful illustration of the original-screen approach, separate from a larger replacement-display installation. It is not a test of this TOP TAKTIL hardware. [16]
Use these reports to improve the test plan. Use the supplied instructions and verified vehicle information to select the actual connections, settings and software.
20 · Verify the finished result
Final installation and customer handover checklist
| Area | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Original Mercedes system | Normal start-up, factory display, radio, vehicle menus and controller operation. |
| Display switching | Correct original and MMI pictures; reliable switching in both directions. |
| Audio route | Correct factory Bluetooth media device, clean music and a usable volume range. |
| Calls and voice | Incoming/outgoing calls, factory microphone clarity, voice input and return of media audio. |
| Phone projection | The driver’s actual phone, supported wired/wireless modes, USB access and reconnection. |
| Camera and parking | Required views, reverse takeover, parking sounds/graphics and return to the previous screen. |
| Original optional equipment | Burmester, 360-degree camera and any other agreed retention items checked individually. |
| Mechanical finish | Secure module, supported cables, consistent trim fit and no obstruction of controls or moving parts. |
| Starting and parking | Engine-start behaviour, shutdown, locking, later wake-up and automatic source selection. |
| Diagnostics and record | New faults investigated, working settings saved and installed parts identified. |
Demonstrate the correct switching button, the MMI USB socket and the two pairing roles. Show how to select the intended audio source and how to reconnect after changing phones. Explain any agreed limitation using the actual installed equipment.
Give the driver the module instructions, working configuration and support details. Keep removed original parts labelled. If a personal phone was used for testing, remove that test connection through the supported process before handover.
21 · Plan the complete job
Installation time, costs and choosing a fitter
Plan the job around the original equipment and required retention. Access, cable routing, audio commissioning and camera checks take time beyond physically inserting the box. A short installation video may omit much of that testing.
A useful quotation identifies the exact interface, harness, camera accessories if needed, labour, configuration and final checks. It also states which original functions will remain and any limitations requiring agreement.
Include these items in the fitting discussion
- Vehicle build details, original system and actual display.
- The intended Bluetooth audio and factory-microphone arrangement.
- Camera type, parking functions and optional equipment.
- Module mounting and accessible USB routing.
- Before/after checks, diagnostics and a later restart test.
- Supplier support and the installed hardware/software record.
A competent fitter should be able to explain the connection paths and show a complete test result. Seek professional assistance when system identification is uncertain, wiring differs from the instructions or access involves equipment requiring specialist precautions.
22 · Common questions
Mercedes W205 / GLC X253 CarPlay retrofit FAQ
Does this kit fit every W205 or X253 registered from 2016 to 2019?
No blanket fitment should be assumed. The original infotainment generation, display, harness and required functions must match the exact interface. Confirm build details and equipment before ordering.
Why does my car get called NTG5.2 when the product says NTG5.0?
Retrofit catalogues often use NTG5.0 broadly, while specialist identification describes W205/X253 equipment more specifically as NTG5/NTG5.2. Confirm the actual unit and the supplied module’s configuration.
Is a 2019 C-Class automatically compatible?
No. Production changes and facelift equipment make the actual hardware decisive. A 7-inch screen alone does not establish that the earlier NTG interface is appropriate.
Does this selection include NTG5.5 or MBUX?
Those systems are not automatically covered by this NTG5.0 selection. Obtain confirmation of the correct interface and harness for that vehicle instead of applying this installation unchanged.
Can it be fitted to an existing aftermarket Android screen?
This kit is intended for the compatible original Mercedes display. An earlier Android conversion can change the video and control architecture and needs a separate assessment.
Will the original screen become touch-sensitive?
No. The interface adds a selectable picture source, not a physical touch layer. Use the supported factory controller, steering buttons and voice features.
Do Audio 20 and COMAND use identical installation parts?
Do not assume this. Identify the complete factory configuration, screen and connections, then match the kit diagram and ordered version.
Do I need to replace the screen or original head unit?
The original-screen retrofit keeps those components as part of the system. The installation adds the compatible interface and its specified connections.
Must the original wiring be cut?
The fitting plan uses the specified vehicle connectors and harness. Resolve any unexplained need to cut factory wiring before proceeding. Optional accessories require their own approved connection instructions.
What is DC_Audio_BT for?
It is the product guidance’s reference for the MMI audio connection that pairs with the original Mercedes Bluetooth system. Use the actual corresponding device name displayed by the supplied module.
What is the CAJA Bluetooth connection for?
It identifies the phone-to-MMI connection in the supplied product guidance. It is a different role from the car-to-MMI audio connection. Use the complete device name shown on the interface.
Do I need factory Bluetooth music streaming?
Yes, the described installation uses the original Bluetooth audio function. Verify music streaming before fitting; hands-free telephone support alone is not a sufficient check.
Does using USB for CarPlay remove the Bluetooth audio requirement?
No. The phone’s wired projection connection and the interface’s audio route to the car are separate. Keep the approved speaker route configured.
Do I have to activate AUX?
This guide follows the Bluetooth audio method specified for this kit. Other module revisions and older products may use AUX. Do not apply their coding or adapter instructions without confirmation.
Can I use the factory microphone?
The product supports compatible factory-microphone operation through the correct installation and configuration. Test incoming/outgoing calls and voice input separately from music.
Will Burmester audio remain in use?
The original Mercedes audio system remains part of the retrofit. Preserve the required connections and confirm compatibility, then test all relevant sound functions before and after fitting.
Will the steering-wheel controls and console controller work?
Supported factory controls can operate the interface. Verify the actual button mapping, switching action, call controls and short/long-press behaviour for the supplied version.
Will the original reversing camera still work?
Compatible OEM camera support is listed, but the specific system and camera mode must be confirmed. Test takeover and return from both the original view and phone projection.
Does OEM camera support include every 360-degree system?
No blanket 360-degree guarantee should be inferred. Confirm the exact camera controller, required views and interface revision, then include those functions in the fitting test.
Can I use an AHD reversing camera?
No. This interface does not support AHD cameras. Use a compatible CVBS camera and match its power, video format and trigger arrangement to the instructions.
Can I keep factory FM radio and hear phone navigation at the same time?
That depends on the interface’s supported audio behaviour. Changing to FM can change the selected source used for projected sound. Test the preferred arrangement rather than assuming simultaneous playback.
Will phone navigation appear in the instrument cluster or head-up display?
Do not assume it. The original navigation and phone-projection outputs are separate. Confirm any required cluster or head-up display support explicitly.
Can I download Android apps directly to this interface?
Do not treat the MMI as an Android tablet. Android Auto projects compatible phone functions. Use only software and media functions supported by the actual retrofit module.
Can I use DIP settings or firmware from another NTG5 box?
Use only the settings and software approved for the actual supplied revision. Similar names, enclosures and connector colours do not establish interchangeable configuration or firmware.
Is the retrofit suitable for right-hand-drive vehicles?
Confirm the ordered harness and vehicle application. Retaining the original screen does not remove differences in access, mounting space or cable routing between vehicles.
What should I send TOP TAKTIL to check compatibility?
Provide the vehicle model, year/build details, original-system information and clear photographs of the dashboard, display and controller. Include sound/camera options and any previous modifications. Supply VIN details privately if requested.
